I heard this song today on Sirius 40s on 4 and thought it was pure gold. What it was doing on my big band, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald station, I haven't a clue. It's from a 1966 tv movie called The Love Song of Barney Kempinski, for which Alan Arkin was nominated an Emmy Award (Outstanding Single Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Drama). Wunnerful! Wunnerful!

Today is the King of Champagne Music's birthday! That's right--Lawrence Welk was born on this day in 1903. That would've made him 107! I remember watching him at my Godmother's house and watching his wunnerful dancers as he directed his orchestra with, "Ana one, ana two". His show ran from 1955 to 1982. Twenty-seven years!

Here are a few tidbits about the wunnerful Maestro of Magic that you may not know:

• His accent is a mix of Russian and German.
• His first band was Lawrence and the Hotsy Totsy Boys.
• Bob Barker had his Beauties, Heff has his Bunnies and Lawrence had his Champagne Ladies, but unlike the others, the Champagne Ladies actually had talent--each was the featured singer in his band.
• He developed and lived at The Welk Resort and Champagne Village.
• He was married for 61 years, had 3 kids, loved to play golf and was a minister in the Universal Life Church.
• His company the Welk Group, known as Teleklew, owns real estate, record labels and his syndicated show.

So, how do you celebrate Lawrence Welk's birthday? By blowing bubbles, drinking champagne and watching this clip of the Lawrence Welk show, of course! Check out his wunnerful facial expressions!

This is my favorite love song. I generally don't like lovey dovey songs, but it's by Willie and well, you know how I feel about Willie. I've seen him a bunch of times, but one of my favorites was when we saw him at The Grand in Galveston on Valentine's Day. It was a weekend trip for our anniversary. Willie sang "Valentine" and even after all these years, it was perfect. Hope you enjoy it and have a lovey dovey Valentine's Day!

Music Flavor of the Month- Willie Nelson

In honor of Go Texan season, this month’s musical selection features one of my top 5 favorite musical artists of all time, Texas native and founder of Farm Aid, Willie Nelson. The Red-headed Stranger first showed up on the music scene in 1960, when he went to Nashville to be a songwriter. All of the songs on the playlist were written by Willie, some recorded by western greats like Patsy Cline and Roy Orbison. As old and crunchy as he is, he still gives a great concert with his old trusty guitar, Trigger. There is no mistaking his honest tunes and his distinctive voice.

Willie Nelson was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors Award in 1998, and was declared a Texas Treasure in 2003 by the Senate of the State of Texas. Willie Nelson lives in Luck, Texas, a little town that he built in 1986. I hope you enjoy this month’s music flavor of the month.

Music Flavor of the Month- Harry Connick

This month, we're celebrating a two-fer! In honor of Valentine's Day and Mardi Gras, we are listening to one of New Orleans' favorite sons, Harry Connick, Jr. Harry Connick, Jr. is a jazz musician and actor who has been in almost 20 films, acted in 3 Broadway productions and recorded close to 30 albums.


In 1993, he and his father founded the Mardi Gras krewe, Krewe of Orpheus, named after the mythical Greek character known as the "father of songs". The Krewe of Orpheus quickly became one of the largest krewes in New Orleans, due in no small part to the inclusiveness of its membership-- accepting members of every race, gender and ethnicity. It was the first superkrewe to accept both men and women.

So many of Harry Connick, Jr.'s songs are romantical-like, so I thought it was very appropriate for this month's musical enjoyment.

Music Flavor of the Month- Schoolhouse Rock!

This month's play list features the musical styling of the pop culture super series, Schoolhouse Rock! If you are a child of the 70s, you probably remember the educational cartoon shorts that played during the Saturday morning cartoons on ABC. If you sing "Conjunction Junction" to just about anyone, chances are they'll sing along. Isn't education groovy? Dig it.

* In 1996, a tribute album entitled "Schoolhouse Rock Rocks", featured covers by Moby, Blind Melon and Better Than Ezra.
